October 8, 2001: (oop.. just read the future features list and multiple categories is on it, so add 1 heaping grain of salt...) Like many other webloggers, I'm hopeful about Moveable Type. In many ways the feature list reads like my personal wish list. But...

Categories are useless in this context if an entry can't belong to more than one at a time. Period.

Well, not period.. I'd even be satisfied if every entry could belong to say 3 categories. But 1? Wouldn't be worth using, because it imposes mutual-exclusivity where it doesn't belong. For example, should I classify Jakob Nielsen's forthcoming Homepage Usability under "Usability" or "Books" or "Announcements" or "Overexposed gurus" or what? This post I'm writing, for example, would (on my weblog) end up under something like "content management," "web applications," and "faceted classification."
